A sleek, accurate trimmer with top-notch performance and elegant design, the award-winning Panasonic ER-GB80-S beard, hair, and body trimmer is a solid choice for men with all styles of facial hair. And if you just take the time to properly care for this trimmer, you will not be disappointed.
While the aesthetic appeal of your trimmer probably isn’t the first thing on your mind, this gadget’s sleek, elegant design simply cannot be ignored. There’s a reason it won the 2014 Good Design Award. It’s a simply beautiful machine. Silver and black, with needle-sharp trimmers, rubberized grips, and a slender, ergonomic design, this trimmer is built for smooth, easy use.
In addition to its three comb attachments for hair, beards/mustaches and body hair, it also comes with a slide-up trimmer for detail work, a cleaning brush, and an AC charger. Everything about this product is built to be sleek and simple to use. Its power button falls exactly where your thumb wants to go when you pick it up. Its adjustment dial is right there on the front, but it’s far enough away from where your fingers fall that you’re not likely to accidentally change the length of your trim halfway through a shave.
This trimmer works extremely well on just about any kind of beard or skin. The blades are made of hypoallergenic stainless steel, so no matter how sensitive your skin is, you’re not likely to get any kind of nasty splotches on your face after a good shave. The stainless steel blades are sharper and more durable than typical nickel blades as well, so it will be a while before you have to start looking for replacements.
There are three comb attachments that come in the package, each of which is suited to a different kind of hair. The “A” comb attachment (1 to 10mm) is for trimming, while the “B” attachment (11 to 20mm) is for longer beards or head hair. There’s also the 1.5mm, which is great for manscaping along your underarms, chest, legs, back, etc. You can easily adjust the length of your trim with the dial, which goes up and down in half-millimeter increments. There are 39 trim settings in all.
Now, there are a couple limitations to performance. First of all, although it is waterproof, it’s only designed to work on dry skin. So if you’re used to shaving in the shower or shortly afterwards, you might have to rethink a bit of your morning routine. Second of all, the blades are set at a 45-degree angle, and there’s no way to adjust that. However, 45 degrees is considered by many to be the optimum angle for most beard styles.
All in all, you really shouldn’t have many performance issues. This gadget works well on all kinds of hair, and you should be able to get the exact style you want.
The batteries on this thing are pretty good, though there are a couple drawbacks, which we’ll get to. It’ll work for up to 50 minutes on its rechargeable Ni-MH battery, and it’ll work both wirelessly and while plugged in. You can have a rough idea of how much battery is left in it based on the three LED dots above the plug icon (the number of dots lit up indicates how much juice is left), so you won’t have to worry about it suddenly dying on you while you shave on your way to work. It’ll work just fine up until it dies, though—no waning power toward the end of the charging cycle or anything.
A couple downsides to the battery- First of all, you can’t really replace it. To be fair, it’ll probably last you a long while, but it’s still kind of annoying, since all batteries get weaker eventually. Another minor inconvenience is that it doesn’t come with a charging stand.
So, it’s not totally perfect, but there’s nothing that should be a deal breaker.
A couple slightly bigger issues come up when you start getting into maintaining this thing. You’ll find a little bottle of blade oil in your kit when you start unboxing. The Amazon description says that this is to prevent rust, but that’s really just part of it. This oil keeps your blades lubricated—and if you don’t lubricate your blades every time before you shave, your experience is going to be a lot less comfortable, and possibly a little more uneven. You must apply oil before every shave for the best results.
Additionally, as with all trimmers, you will need to clean out the blades every now and then. While it does come with a cleaning brush right out of the box, it doesn’t actually work that well. You’ll probably want to invest in a new brush, unless you want to spend an unnecessary amount of time trying to clean your trimmer.
You’ll also have to run this thing under the faucet every now and again to get out loose hairs. This, at least, is a pretty straightforward process. The trimmer is totally waterproof, and its open drain design allows water to easily flow and clean your blades everywhere you need.
Overall, the Panasonic ER-GB80-S is definitely a good investment. Not only does it work beautifully on all kinds of beards, but it’s also got you covered everywhere on your body—literally from head to toe. There are a couple minor drawbacks, but nothing that should scare you off. It’s smooth, sturdy, and easy to handle—and it looks amazing, to boot. It’s most definitely a solid product for the price.
